Waking up to your car having egg on it is never a good way to start the day. Egg on a car can cause damage to the paint. When this happens, you'll realize you need to clean it up. However, how do you improve the paint? Will your auto insurance policy help you?
How an Egging May Have Coverage
It is not always possible to get car insurance to pay for your damage. If your Affordable Insurance Group agent sees the damage as a type of vandalism, it may qualify under some forms of coverage. There are limits to consider though.
How Extensive Is the Damage?
If you have a few areas of minor scratches from the eggshells, it may not be enough damage for a claim. If, on the other hand, the vehicle's paint has damage throughout it, you may be able to get coverage. To determine this, get an estimate from your mechanic about the cost to repair the damage.
Then, consider your insurance deductible. Most car insurance companies have a deductible. This is the amount you are responsible to pay for any accident before the insurer pays the remaining amount. Most drivers have a deductible of $500 to $1,000, sometimes more. If the damage from the egging is not above the cost of the deductible, there is no benefit to filing a claim. If the damage costs $1,200, and your deductible is $500, the insurer will cover $700 if they accept the claim.
When Will They Help You?
If your own kids egged your car, chances are good your auto insurance policy will have limitations on the coverage available to you. If you can show it was vandalism, however, it may fall under your comprehensive auto insurance. If you believe this is the case, be sure to file a police report. The police will document the incident. They will provide you with a report you can give to your auto insurance company. From there, the agent will attempt to file the claim for you.
If you have comprehensive car insurance and you believe the damage was an act of vandalism, contact your Affordable Insurance Group agent. Let them know what happened. Document the incident with pictures and any evidence you have on hand. This can help prove your case and help you to get coverage.
